The last words Jesus spoke before He ended His adventure here on earth were a powerful promise. He said, "And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:20, Discover God, (NLT).

Jesus knew that His disciples had a lot of hard work ahead of them and that they needed the comfort of knowing they would never be alone. It's like what a little girl experienced during a war in her country.

Bombs were crashing all around the girl's town. The building she and her dad were hiding in was about ready to collapse. Her dad took her by the hand, and they ran out into the street. Her dad spotted a huge hole left by an explosion and jumped into it for safety. He reached his hands up to his little girl and told her to jump. But it was dark in the hole, and his daughter couldn't see him or his arms. "I can't!" she cried, "I'm afraid!" Then she heard the strong, soft voice of her father speak to her from the darkness, "I'm right here, I will catch you. Come on honey, jump!" She didn't hesitate this time. Jumping into the darkness, she knew her dad was there and that he would catch her . . . and he did.

Do you think it would have been hard for you to jump into the dark hole?

What gave her the courage to do it? (She knew her dad, and she knew he was there.)

We read Jesus' promise, but now let me read what He said just before that:

Read Matthew 28:18,19

Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."Discover God Bible, (NLT).

Jesus was about to leave the earth. He knew we wouldn't "see" Him anymore because He would be in Heaven, and yet He also knew we would need to know that He's with us if we are to have the courage to follow His instructions.

What were His instructions? (In verse 18, Jesus tells His disciples to go and make more disciples around the world. The first step in making a disciple is to talk with people about who Jesus is and why we need a relationship with Him.)

Why do you think the disciples needed to hear that Jesus would be with them as they went to tell others about Him? (They needed courage.)

Have you ever tried to tell someone about Jesus? What happened?

Whether it went well or not, Jesus was there and was working to give you courage and strength and to give that person the opportunity to believe in Him.

Is there someone you think needs to hear about how he can have a relationship with Jesus? Maybe he is lonely, discouraged, or feels hopeless. Make a list and begin praying as a family for opportunities to talk with people about Jesus.

Why does it matter?

The greatest gift we can give someone is the opportunity to hear about Jesus. You are never alone when talking with someone about Jesus. He is with you, giving you courage. Look for opportunities to share His gift!
